The BET Awards has announced some of the biggest names in music taking part, in the award shows, highly anticipated tribute to Prince. Some of the performers are Sheila E, Janelle Monae, D’Angelo, The Roots and more. BET says the entire broadcast, will practically be a tribute to the music legend – with several moments throughout the program honoring the life and career of Prince.

Yeah, we saw that, Don’t worry. We Got You

– BET on Twitter

Late last month, Prince fans criticized the Billboard Awards for their tribute to Prince with Madonna performing “Nothing Compares 2 U” and “Purple Rain” with Stevie Wonder, coming in, for what some say – the rescue . BET even commented tweeting “Yeah, we saw that, Don’t worry. We Got You”. Some music fans felt Madonna was not the right choice, considering the conflict between the two, in the late 80’s – lasting almost two decades. The pair eventually made up in later years, however, a sector of music fans felt artists like Stevie Wonder, Chaka Kahn, Larry Graham, Morris Day and The Time, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (hit producers and past band members of The Time) and Sheena Easton – who are all former proteges of Prince – would have made a better fit in general.

Selecting artist for a tribute to Prince proves to be difficult, considering he’s one of a kind, and very few of today’s artist stack up to that level. With BET tweeting their displeasure over the Billboard Awards tribute. I expect many surprise guests throughout the broadcast.

The BET awards will be hosted by comedian Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross (both from the show Black-ish) on June 26 (BET, 8 p.m. live ET/taped PT). We look forward to seeing what Stephen Hill (President of Program at BET) has planned for this occasion considering he is a big Prince fan.
