Rihanna announced the release of her latest music video for “Sledgehammer”, her contribution to the Star Trek Beyond soundtrack, on Twitter today. This is the first music video (ever) to be released in IMAX theaters today at 9 am (EST.) and on YouTube at 10 am (EST). The intergalactic video shows Rihanna on a remote planet, all alone with strange symbolic makeup on her face, wearing a flowing orange garment. The visuals are beautiful with a mix of swirling colors and rapid movement as the USS Enterprise (spaceship used in the Star Trek film and TV series) travels through space. Rihanna’s unique IMAX theater release may be an indicator of what to expect from Star Trek Beyond next month July 22nd.

I hit a wall, I thought that I would hurt myself/ Oh I was sure your words would leave me unconscious, And on the floor I’d be lying cold, lifeless/ But I hit a wall, I hit ’em all, watch the fall

– Rihanna “Sledgehammer”

The song “Sledgehammer” is a pop power ballad and was written by Jesse Shatkin and Australian singer/songwriter, Sia. The song is very somber but uplifting at the same time, as Rihanna sings, “I hit a wall, I thought that I would hurt myself/ Oh I was sure your words would leave me unconscious, And on the floor I’d be lying cold, lifeless/ But I hit a wall, I hit ’em all, watch the fall” – hitting the wall, thinking you will fall apart but you are stronger than you realise – like a sledgehammer. Rihanna continues to sing “You’re just another break and I”m a sledgehammer”. You will get through the painful impact and will survive the emotional trauma – just as you did before.
